St Patrick's Day, the grandest day in Ireland’s cultural calendar, calls us again. It’s not just a date on the calendar; it’s a national holiday—a day to celebrate the nation’s patron saint. But let’s rewind the tape, shall we? Back to the beginning.
Initially, in the 1600s, it was a solemn religious observance, dedicated to honoring the patron saint of Ireland. Families attended church services, and Lenten prohibitions against meat consumption were waived for the day. The traditional Irish feast featured bacon and cabbage—a hearty and flavorful dish.

Parades, Performances, and Irish Pride
But our journey doesn’t stop in Ireland. Oh no, my friends, over the years, something magical happened. Today, the celebration continues worldwide, with green attire, music, parades, and camaraderie.
We’re heading out on a journey. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world. It's a day when people dress in green, march in parades, and millions celebrate with the Irish.
Beyond Ireland, Irish immigrants in America fostered patriotism, leading to the emergence of St. Patrick’s Day parades. From parades in Boston, New York, and San Francisco to the dyeing of the Chicago River, and unexpected places like Malta, Russia, South Korea, Singapore,—and outer space. In 2011, green-clad astronauts aboard the International Space Station observed the occasion by playing the flute and tin whistle as they hovered midair.
Mexico has a historical link to St. Patrick’s Day due to the "San Patricios," a battalion of mostly Irish soldiers who fought for Mexico in the Mexican-American War. Their legacy lives on with celebrations in Mexico City.
Across the Pacific, in Japan, the "I Love Ireland Festival" brings together thousands to enjoy Irish music, dance, and food.
In Oregon, particularly Portland, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated with parades, parties, festivals, the Shamrock Run, and even a local author speaking event at the Rose City Book Pub with food, music, and political candidates too!
