Celebrating the MLK Jr. Holiday: Honoring Heroes Who Inspire Change β¨ποΈποΈ
Reflecting on the enduring legacy of Dr. King and other heroes, and a call for action, service, and empathy to honor their contributions.
Hello fellow travelers, inspiring leaders, and community leaders,
As I celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, I stop and remember the message and legacy of Dr. King and the leaders who inspired and dedicated their lives to justice, equality, and compassion. This day serves as both a remembrance and a call to actionβa reminder that we must contribute to the greater good.
In stark contrast to the values of service, justice, and integrity lived by Dr. King, the incoming President's rhetoric and actions reflect a different set of priorities. His divisive rhetoric, attempts to overturn the 2020 election, incitement of violence on January 6, and disregard for the rule of law have eroded trust in our democracy. His policies favor the wealthy, neglect marginalized communities, and worsen social inequalities. This is not the leadership we need.
I will focus on the dream and ignore the nightmare.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. -Martin Luther King, Jr.

President Jimmy Carter: A Life of Service and Integrity
Need another example of a leader who models good for the people?
President Jimmy Carter leaves behind a legacy of profound service and humility. His journey from a peanut farmer to the highest office in the country is a reminder that leadership can come from any background. It's truly remarkable that he lived to be 100 years old and never stopped dedicating his life to being a good person for all.
President Jimmy Carter's life was a model of empathy, humility, and dedication to the common good. From his early years as a peanut farmer in Georgia to his tenure as the 39th President of the United States, Carter consistently demonstrated a commitment to human rights, peace, and community development. His presidency saw significant achievements, including the Camp David Accords and efforts to promote energy conservation and environmental protection. After leaving the White House, Carter continued to serve humanity through his work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center, focusing on advancing human rights and alleviating suffering. His values of compassion, humility, and integrity stand in stark contrast to the divisive and self-serving behavior often seen in today's political landscape, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of holding our leaders accountable to the highest standards of empathy and commitment to the greater good.
I featured President James βJimmyβ Carter in my book, READY, SET, GO!: Playbook for Campaigns, Candidates, and Causes.
As a mark of respect, USA flags are flown at half-mast to honor his remarkable contributions.

Everyday Heroes: The Heartbeat of Communities
While it is important to honor historical figures, the everyday heroes among us deserve recognition as well. Teachers shaping young minds, healthcare workers caring for the sick, activists fighting for justice, and volunteers dedicating time to those in needβthese individuals embody the spirit of service and resilience.
Consider the firefighters in Los Angeles, many traveling from Mexico, Canada, and other states, who risk their lives to save others from burning buildings, the social workers who tirelessly support families in crisis, the community organizers who unite neighborhoods to create positive change, and the environmentalists who dedicate their time to fighting for our planet. These everyday heroes walk the talk of good in our communities, demonstrating the values of empathy, humility, and commitment to the greater good in their daily actions.
Their contributions may not always make headlines, but their impact is profound. They inspire us to be better, give more, and strive for a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Call to Action
As we celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, letβs turn off and tune out the Inauguration Ceremony that features a convicted felon and three oligarchs, and turn on and turn out our power in honor of Dr. King, President Jimmy Carter, and the countless heroes who have dedicated their lives to justice, equality, and compassion.
Engage in service: Volunteer at a local food pantry, mentor someone in need or participate in a community cleanup. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of positive change.
Advocate for justice: Speak out against inequality, discrimination, and harmful behavior. Use your voice to challenge injustice and promote fairness in your community.
Practice empathy: Approach others with understanding and compassion, fostering unity in an often-divided world. Empathy can bridge divides and create stronger, more connected communities.
