Hello fellow travelers, life-givers, and nurturers
Letโs take this opportunity to celebrate all our Moms, Mamas, Grandmas, and those special people who gave us the gift of life, raised us, and continue to love us unconditionally. I am profoundly grateful for my Mom and feel fortunate to spend quality time with her, our family, and loved ones this year on Motherโs Day.
Motherโs Day falls on the second Sunday of May. This year, itโs on Sunday, May 12, 2024. Can we get a round of applause for all the moms out there? ๐
The History of Mother's Day and Why We Celebrate It
Motherโs Day, a special holiday celebrated worldwide, has its roots in ancient times. The Greeks and Romans held festivals to honor motherhood, with the Greeks venerating their mothers as โlife-giversโ and showing them great respect. Rhea, known as the โMother of Gods,โ represented nature and fertility and was considered Mother Earthโs daughter.
Fast forward to more recent times, and we find a few remarkable women to thank for the Motherโs Day we know today. ๐
In the United States, Motherโs Day gained popularity thanks to several strong women advocating for womenโs rights and peace. Julia Ward Howe, a politically active abolitionist, suffragette, and the author of โThe Battle Hymn of the Republic,โ proposed a โMothersโ Peace Dayโ as part of her antiwar efforts, calling for mothers to unite in promoting world peace.
However, the Motherโs Day we recognize today didnโt emerge until the early 20th century, largely due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis. After her motherโs death in 1905, Anna campaigned relentlessly for a national day to honor mothers and their sacrifices. In 1908 she organized the first official Mother's Day celebration at a Methodist church in West Virginia. Finally, her tireless advocacy culminated in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation officially designating the second Sunday in May as Motherโs Day.
