What could be cozier on a cool fall weekend than gathering around the campfire to toast marshmallows and enjoy delicious roasted chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallow sβmores?
A Tasty Treat and a Tip
This summer I enjoyed a wonderful weekend trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon ending the perfect day with roasted marshmallows around the campfire during sunset with Haystack Rock in the distance.
Tip: Surfsand Beach Resort provides a complimentary group s'mores fest for its guests. Or, you can pay a fee for a set up of firewood, marshmallows, chocolates, metal sticks, and graham crackers. Be sure to tip the friendly staff who will even help you start your fire and keep it warm for you!
You can kick it up a notch with different chocolates and cookies beyond the traditional graham crackers and Hershey chocolate bars. Mix it up with a waffle cone, Girl Scout cookies, Reeseβs Peanut Butter, or Nestleβs Crunch. Yummy!

The Marshmellow Story
I love to sandwich a toasted marshmallow and chocolate between two graham crackers to cook a yummy Sβmore. Popular with scouts and campers, its history dates back to the early 1920s, when it was called a βGraham Cracker Sandwichβ and later contraction of βsome more.β
Toast two marshmallows over the coals to a crisp gooey state and then put them inside a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich. The heat of the marshmallow between the halves of chocolate bar will melt the chocolate a bit. Though it tastes like "some more" one is really enough.1
Pink flower marsh mallow plants are native to Egypt and grow in the swamps and bogs. These sweet plants were once used as cough suppressants, immune system boosters, and wound healers. Egyptians used the sap from the root to soothe sore throats. In the 1800s, French candy makers mixed the sap with rose water-flavored egg white meringue to create a sweet candy.2
Did You Know You Can Make Homemade Marshmallows at Home?
This is my favorite recipe with marshmallows infused with lavender picked from the local farm that is so delicious!3 They make great additions to your holiday gifts too!
